Legalization of cannabis in Uruguay
Fully legalized cannabis in Uruguay
12/11/2013
The German hemp association sees in the decision to complete legalization of cannabis by the Senate of Uruguay the beginning of the end of the world cannabis prohibition. Following the successful referenda in the states of Washington and Colorado a year ago, Uruguay is the first nation in the world to subject the entire cannabis market from cultivation to retail to government regulation. Following the signing of the law by the president and initiator of the law José Mujica, a regulation system for cannabis will be created within 120 days. Georg Wurth of the German Hemp Association now sees the politics in Europe and Germany in the pressure to move.
„The ostrich tactics and perplexed reform unwillingness of the past years is no longer tenable. Politicians will have to face the question of alternatives to the cannabis ban or they will be overtaken by history. After the courageous progress of President Mujica and the Obama administration's okay for legalization in Washington and Colorado, it became clear that international treaties were long since obsolete. It is time to finally discuss the subject seriously in the Bundestag.“
The voices for an alternative drug policy will always be the same in Germany. 40 percent of all German criminal law professors are currently calling for a review of the repressive drug policy in a resolution to the Bundestag, and the district parliament Friedrichshain / Kreuzberg decided two weeks ago to launch a model project for the legal cannabis dispute in order to test an alternative to the failed prohibition policy.
