Increased bone fracture risk due to weight change

04/02/2015

A recent study shows that postmenopausal women are at an increased risk of bone fracture if they have increased or decreased significantly. The effects of postmenopausal weight changes on bone fracture risk can vary greatly, according to Los Angeles scientists, based on data from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Observational Study.

They evaluated the data of around 120,000 women. Women who lost 5% or more of their body weight had hip fractures and upper limb fractures significantly more frequently. Central body fractures (hip, pelvis or spine) were also more common.

In contrast, women who gained 5% or more in weight suffered more frequent fractures in their legs or feet (without hips) and in arms or hands. (Pm)
