Nutrition tips for athletes who suffer from gluten intolerance

The gluten-free diet is currently in the trend, but even if many people voluntarily opt for a gluten waiver, so it is necessary for people with celiac disease. The gluten intolerance severely restricts the affected person in the diet because the gluten protein is part of many cereal and finished products. In particular athletes need a lot of energy. But bread and pasta as an energy supplier are out of the question for people with celiac disease. What alternatives are there for those affected? The German Celiac Society (DZG) clarifies.

According to DZG, potatoes, rice and bananas are good sources of energy for celiac disease patients. Also, unprocessed nuts and dried fruits are well suited for this purpose because they are naturally gluten-free. But beware of candied products, such as roasted almonds, trail mix or nut cake mixes. Gluten may be included here.

Meat, fish, eggs and dairy products contain important protein

Protein is also important for athletes. Dairy products, eggs, meat and fish contain a lot of protein but no gluten. Thus, these products are suitable for people with celiac disease. However, special care is also taken with finished products, as gluten is used as a carrier for flavorings and is thus hidden in many sauces and prepared meals. Likewise, breaded meat and fish products may contain gluten in the breading.

Beware of voluntary waiver

Those who opt for voluntary abstinence from gluten, should pay special attention to a balanced diet, as a gluten waiver involves a certain risk of malnutrition. Here the question is justified, how meaningful a Glutenverzicht really is. (Vb)
