Sage extract also suitable for weaning?

22.11.2012

Sage leaves have proven to be particularly effective in inflammation of the mouth and throat area. Traditionally, salvia preparations are used in natural medicine against increased sweating. According to the results of a recent study, however, sage is apparently also suitable for primary weaning in women who have recently given birth.

If young mothers have to breastfeed in the first six weeks after delivery, they are currently getting cabergoline prescribed. This is an ergot derived alkaloid, which can cause serious unwanted side effects when taken for prolonged use. Even with short use, as is usual in weaning, occur in about one in ten patients unwanted side effects such as headache, dizziness, nausea or even nerve disorders. That is why obstetricians are constantly looking for alternatives that can effectively inhibit milk injection. One such option could be a preparation of sage leaves.

A team from the Hochtaunus Clinics, Bad Homburg, Germany, conducted a prospective, controlled study with 32 women - 18 patients received cabergoline, 14 the herbal medicine - in which the efficacy of the herbal preparation was tested in comparison to cabergoline (Gynecol Obstet (2012 ) 286 (Suppl 1): S 49 - S 279).

Evaluation of the results showed that after taking cabergoline in all women, the milk injection failed, but eight of them complained of side effects such as dizziness and headache. Despite the herbal remedy, 12 patients in the salbei group had milk injections. Four of them had related complaints.

Interestingly, three weeks later, a slightly different picture emerged. Six women from the cabergoline group were subsequently given a milk injection at home, four with associated symptoms. In the Salbei group, there were still occasional milk flows in eight women, but only one of them complained about complaints. Accordingly, the assessment was clearly made by the patients in favor of the Salbei group. With the herbal remedy only one patient was restricted or not satisfied, in the cabergoline group there were eight patients. The difference was statistically significant. (KFN)
