Recall: Dog food with harmful content in circulation

A manufacturer with worldwide distribution of pet food recalls various dog food products. Apparently, it came in the production of a Lenensgefährlichen overdose of the vitamin D amount. First deaths have already been reported by dogs consuming the feed.


Affected are various dog food varieties of the American manufacturer "Hill's Pet Nutrition", which are also sold in Germany in retail outlets, veterinary practices and on the Internet. Due to a supplier error, excessive amounts of vitamin D have entered the feed. This can cause vomiting, loss of appetite, severe thirst, increased urination, weight loss, and renal dysfunction in dogs, which in some cases have already killed the animal.

As the manufacturer states in a public notice, the following products are affected:

The food should not be used anymore

"Pet owners who have purchased the product with the specified lot numbers should discontinue feeding and dispose of these products immediately," warns the manufacturer. If the dog shows signs of illness after consumption, a veterinarian should be consulted. According to the manufacturer, a complete recovery is expected in most cases as soon as the animal switches to another feed. The feed is replaced via the website or the hotline of the manufacturer "Hill's Pet Nutrition".

First deaths reported

The first deaths of dogs fed with animal feed have already been reported on the Internet. Even the dog of the American reporter Caitlin Gibson the newspaper "Washington Post" was killed in this way. "My beloved girl died after eating this affected pet food and showed all the symptoms of vitamin D poisoning," Gibson wrote in a Twitter message.
