Cancer is the biggest for many people „bogeyman“ among the diseases and is linked to great fears, incurability and hopelessness. However, the chances of recovery are much better than many believe, with many more people dying from cardiovascular disease than from cancer.
Diagnosis Cancer usually associated with incurability and hopelessness
Those who receive the diagnosis of cancer react in shock and quickly connect them with death anxiety and a feeling of hopelessness. But the disease is in many cases far less hopeless than commonly thought - in Germany now every second cancer patient is cured, said the head of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), Otmar Wiestler, the news agency dpa. According to him, cancer is still anchored in public as a great danger, „Today, however, this very negative image of cancer is far from justified“, emphasizes Wiestler.
Cardiovascular disease is now the leading cause of death
Given the good chances of recovery, the assessment of the danger of cancer, for example, compared to Alzheimer's is not correct, the expert continues. Because while it is an irreversible form of dementia, the chances of recovery in the case of a cancer diagnosis increase more and more. According to the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), it is taken into account that people today are getting significantly older than they were 20 years ago. In Germany, cancer mortality has been declining for years: Before 1980, more than two-thirds of all patients did not survived, more than 50% of the cases today could kill the cancer permanently. Also, the cancer is no more „Cause of death No.1“ as many have assumed - in this country meanwhile significantly more people are dying from cardiovascular diseases (2013: 40.2%) such as a heart attack or stroke.
