In Germany, almost 70 apple varieties are cultivated commercially. Only about 30 of them play a bigger role in the market. After the harvest, it is important to store the fruits properly. This is also important for the taste of some varieties.
Healthy wonder drug from nature
The apple is a true miracle product from nature. The tasty fruit contains more than 30 different minerals and trace elements. The fruits promote a healthy intestine, are good for stimulating digestion and contribute due to numerous vitamins to strengthen the immune system. On average, every German citizen eats around 20 kg of apples a year, preferably fresh.
Do not freeze fresh apples
The fruit can also be stored for a long time, but it should be noted that you should never freeze fresh apples, otherwise they lose because of the high water content of consistency and taste. For some varieties it is even advisable not to eat them fresh, but to store them longer.
Some varieties taste better after long storage
Autumn apples like Cox Orange taste best after two to four months of storage, according to a news agency dpa. And the Boskop can even be kept until spring, as the cookbook author Bernadette Wörndl explains in the magazine "Salon" (issue 8/2016).
It is important that the fruits are in a dark and cool room. For early varieties such as the Gravensteiner it is different. The aroma of these apples is most intense when eaten soon after picking. (Ad)
