House dust allergy instead of hay fever
Symptoms of a house dust allergy are similar to those of a pollen allergy
08/26/2013
Relatively many people in Germany suffer increasingly from allergic complaints, especially during the warmer months. As a rule, a pollen allergy or hay fever is suspected here. However, the symptoms can also be due to a house dust allergy, especially if the symptoms occur all year round.
In patients with a house dust allergy, the allergic reaction is not due to pollen in the air, but to the dust mite feces. This causes complaints such as runny nose, a stuffy nose, sneezing attacks, coughing, swollen, watery and itchy eyes. Even an itchy rash may be associated with the house dust allergy. If a suspected hay fever does not disappear during the winter months, the suspicion of a house dust allergy is near. An appropriate allergy test can provide information here.
Affected individuals are often unaware of their house dust allergy
Many people live with a house dust allergy without being aware of it. In view of the often only mild symptoms, those affected do not feel really ill and do not see any need to see a doctor. However, the allergy can get worse in the course of prolonged contact with the allergens. If the symptoms continue to be disregarded, even the development of allergic asthma threatens. In addition, other allergies often develop over time.
As a rule, those affected are initially advised to minimize contact with the allergens. Vacuuming (with HEPA filter), regular airing, adequate humidity and increased bedding change are referred to as easy steps to reduce house dust levels. In addition, various medications should contribute to the relief of allergic complaints. However, these can not bring about any healing of the house dust allergy in itself. Here so far the so-called hyposensitization is the only, if not completely undisputed, way. First, however, it requires a clear diagnosis of the symptoms. Anyone who persistently suffers from allergy symptoms should therefore urgently consult a specialist. (Fp)
