From the consumption of sheep's cheese, the Ministry advises urgently, since the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes can cause the disease listeriosis. The symptoms are similar to those of a seasonal flu. After an incubation period, affected persons usually experience fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain as well as nausea and vomiting. The course of the infectious disease is usually harmless. However, older people, pregnant women, infants and people with a generally weakened immune system are at particular risk. Especially during pregnancy pregnant Listeria can be dangerous as they can cause fetal death or premature birth. People with a weakened defense system are at an increased risk because the infection in the body can spread to several organs and trigger severe inflammation of the meninges. (Ag)
