  • Good news for asparagus friends

    The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) recently announced that asparagus is one of the least polluted vegetables. From 502 asparagus samples tested in 2016, only four samples were above the legally required maximum level of pesticide residues, reports the BVL in a press release. Asparagus is always among the foods that have a large proportion of samples without residues, according to the BVL.

    Comparison to other vegetables

    For the samples, the number of residues from several pesticides is particularly low. For asparagus, according to BVL, this share is only three percent. Compared to other fruits and vegetables, this is a top result, as the multiple residues are otherwise on average 30 percent. In some fruits and vegetables even more than ten different pesticide residues have been detected in a single sample.

    Asparagus is one of the most commonly controlled products

    The BVL reports that asparagus is one of the twenty most frequently examined products in Germany. Most of the sold asparagus in Germany is grown here as well. Only about 20 percent are imported from EU and third countries. Furthermore, the BVL reports that the values ​​of so-called environmental contaminants such as lead, cadmium, mercury, nickel, arsenic and aluminum are also harmless. The lead share had even fallen since 1998 to about one third of the former measurement.

    The first regional product this year should be available in the next few days from mid-April. The green varieties should not be ignored, because green asparagus scores with high vitamin C content.

    Asparagus against cancer?

    A recent study by Cancer Research UK at Cambridge University suggests that asparagus use can suppress the spread of tumor cells. Responsible for this is the amino acid asparagine contained in the asparagus. The results of the study were published in the renowned journal "Nature".
