The world seems to turn faster and faster. Switch off from everyday life
"Learning to meditate is not just a trend, it's also a good idea. Many people report positive effects on their health and well-being, "said Peter Sedlmeier, Professor of Research Methods and Evaluation at the Institute of Psychology of the TU Chemnitz in a statement from the university.
Meditation is therefore a collective name for different techniques that were and are components in all world religions - especially in Buddhism and Hinduism.
These techniques are a great way to disconnect from everyday life. As Prof. Peter Sedlmeier said, according to a recent news agency dpa, people who can get involved and stay with them can expect a whole range of positive effects.
Balanced and emotionally stable
"Those who meditate regularly, according to numerous studies, more balanced, emotionally stable and can handle feelings better," said the expert, according to dpa.
This, for example, indirectly affects friendships and couples.
"However, many do not know what exactly one does, which forms of meditation exist and what meditation can do - and what does not", according to the psychologist in the university communication.
Regularity is especially important
In many meditation approaches, two techniques are practiced: Firstly, to concentrate on something specific, such as one's own breath, and second, to listen to what's going on in your own body, for example.
People who do this regularly tend to be better able to concentrate, to consciously perceive their body and to classify emotions.
But regularity is important: "Better 15 minutes a day than one and a half hours a week," advises Sedlmeier in the dpa message.
Certain people should not meditate
In his opinion, meditating works better with a teacher and in a group. But he also motivates to gain his own experience and just try meditating.
The only exception are people with severe mental illness.
In the statement of the TU Chemnitz Sedlmeier explains: "For example, who suffers from schizophrenia, should avoid meditation techniques or perform them only under close supervision by a meditation experienced therapist." (Ad)
