Football camp for diabetic children at Bundesliga club
Not only adults, but also more and more children and adolescents in Germany develop diabetes. Health experts and policymakers have long been seeking more exposure to metabolic disease. At the weekend, a football camp for diabetic children took place at a Bundesliga club.
Education about metabolic disease
Health experts have increasingly pointed out in recent years that the number of diabetic children and adolescents in Germany is steadily increasing. Various organizations and politicians have been trying for a long time to enlighten and contain new metabolic diseases. For example, in the context of a pilot project, diabetes training for teachers was recently introduced in Rhineland-Palatinate. In neighboring North Rhine-Westphalia, a football camp for children with diabetic children took place in the weekend at a Bundesliga club, which met with great interest.

The football camp for children with diabetes was organized by the football club Bayer 04 Leverkusen, the health insurance pronova BKK, the Leverkusen Clinic and Bayer Diabetes Care. As reported by the "Rheinische Post" (RP) online, around 40 children from all over Germany were able to attend this weekend Exercise for one day under professional conditions. Everyone had great fun, which made them forget their illness for a while. Most people associate the metabolic disease with older people, but in recent years, experts have repeatedly pointed to an increasing number of children with diabetes.
Diabetes and sports can be reconciled
Often it is feared that one can do little or no exercise due to diabetes. But that is not the case. "Diabetics simply need to increase their blood sugar levels many times over before exercise," explained the Director of the Medical Clinic two at the Leverkusen Clinic, Professor Henning Adamek. If the level is normally 120 milligrams per deciliter, a child with diabetes would need to raise his or her level to at least 200 milligrams. "It is also not the case that the children fall over directly if they have too low a blood sugar level," explained the 29-year-old Federal Youth Referee of the German Diabetic Association, Rebecca Weber. According to Weber, who is diabetic himself, there are early and clear signs of hypoglycaemia. There would still be plenty of time to take countermeasures. These clues included sweats, trembling and indignant behavior.
In the future even more diabetic children
"It's best to take carbohydrates and glucose," said Weber. According to the information, about 300,000 people in Germany live with type 1 diabetes - among them about 25,000 children. It is said that the numbers will continue to increase significantly by three to five percent per year. "There is a prognosis for the future in which one out of 800 children will have diabetes in a few years," said Adamek. It has been reported years ago that the increase in childhood diabetes is a mystery, and despite the incidence, the cause of the disease is still poorly understood. However, studies have shown that the cases of the disease increase in the presence of diabetes within the family. (Ad)
