Researchers are proliferating stem cells from umbilical cord blood for the treatment of leukemia
Researchers around Dr. Irwin D. Bernstein of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle published an article in the journal Natural Medicine in which they described that they were able to grow stem cells from umbilical cord blood.
This could be a big step in the future, especially in the treatment of leukemia patients. Until now, the patients had to fight in the therapy with rejection reactions and the lack of donors for bone marrow and stem cell transplantation. And the disadvantage of umbilical cord blood to date has been that it could, of course, be collected only after pregnancies, as part of births, and thus only in small quantities.
It is also spectacular that the blood that has been increased by the researchers contains quasi-neutral stem cells. So it is used without hesitation, because you do not have to fear any defensive reactions as in the previous treatments. For this purpose, this type of therapy should also be gentler than conventional methods.
Researchers have already shown that stem cells increased in the human leukemia patient and began to produce new, healthy blood cells. Since the cell counts contained in the umbilical cord blood units are lower than in comparable amounts of bone marrow or stem cell donations, the researchers must continue to research the possibilities of faster establishment and function in the organism of those affected.
