Since the introduction of the two six-vaccines HEXAVAC and INFANRIX HEXA in autumn 2000, five children have died within the EU 24 hours after vaccination. This is reported by the remedy telegram. Four suspicious reports are from Germany, one from Austria. To date, around 1.6 million children have been vaccinated with six-fold vaccines in Germany. This results in a frequency of one suspicious report per 400,000 children.

The deceased children were 4, 5, 17 and 23 months old. Everyone was considered healthy. There is no evidence to suggest that risk factors such as family cramps could be the cause of death or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Despite the deaths, the EMEA sees no reason for a reassessment of the two vaccines. The medical telegram does not share this opinion and advises to resort to a clarification on proven less valent vaccines. (Pm)
