How do we manage to meet the ideal of beauty suggested by advertising? Many people find that they have to change their appearance in order to feel good. Diets enjoy great popularity and for everyone seems to be something. Whether food combining, fasting or weight watchers.

The problem of all diets is: "If we accept our previous eating habits again, we quickly recover," explains diet expert Melanie Regensburg. And even worse: "Most people experience a veritable increase in body fat after the diet because the body switches to reserve." Many are even thicker than before.

Low-Fat versus Low Crab
The two diets „Low fat“ us „Low crab“ have many followers. In a nutshell, low-carb means eating less carbohydrates and avoiding a low-fat diet on the low-fat diet. With which of the two diets, the desired result is achieved faster and which is better for the body, even scientists, doctors and nutritionists are not quite agreed.

Low crab - a renunciation of carbohydrates
The idea behind Low Carb is simple. The daily meals mainly consist of vegetables, dairy products, fish and meat, with fats and proteins eaten to compensate for the carbohydrates that are lost.

Carbohydrates converted into sugars by the body cause blood sugar levels to rise, leading to increased insulin production. This process inhibits and fat burning. The additional feeling of hunger produced by insulin leads to an overall increased intake of calories. So if we reduce the foods that are carbohydrates, the body burns more fat, explains Michael Ristow, professor of energy metabolism at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland.

DGE recommends balanced nutrition
The typical Western diet consists of about. 50% carbohydrates. Depending on the type of low carb diet, this percentage can be reduced to theoretically zero, which is only recommended in exceptional cases. The German Society for Nutrition (DGE) advises in principle to a diet that focuses on carbohydrates and is balanced. That's not what happens with the low-crab diet. Rather, there is an increased intake of proteins and fats. In the classic low-carb diet, a lot of meat is eaten.

Low fat high fat food is reduced
The increase in industrialized countries is usually attributed to the high level of fat consumption. For this reason, many diets recommended by dieticians contain a reduced amount of fat. The DGE recommends a daily intake of a maximum of 60 to 70 grams of fat. The energy supply should be replaced in this diet by carbohydrates or proteins.

A study by the Department of Medicine at George Washington University found that people who used a low-fat vegan diet averaged 6.5 kilos, while the conventional group consumed only 3.1 kilograms. Another effect was the positive influence on the development of diabetes mellitus type 2. Overall, it is shown that the energy input is the main factor in influencing the body weight. For which diet you decide in the end, it is important to be well feels. (Fr)
