Dentists Company: Bisphenol A is used to make dental fillings and sealants

09/01/2011

Before the chemical plasticizer „Bisphenol A“ in dental fillings and sealants warns the International Society for Holistic Dentistry (GZM). The substance, which works in a similar way to the female estrogen, is also used in dentistry, among other things, as the deputy chairman of the Medical Association, Dr. med. med. dent. Wolfgang H. Koch explained. In his statement, Koch refers to a study by the Federal Environment Agency in May 2010. The study revealed that the hormone-active substance is also used for the production of dental fillings and sealants. In the view of the dentist, this is not acceptable in view of the harmful substance.

Although Bisphenol A is not used directly on fillers and sealants, but based on bisphenol A-based substances such as bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA) and bisphenol A dimethacrylate (Bis-DMA), according to the Environmental Office study. After dental treatment, the harmful substance may be released in the mouth.

Despite numerous indications of a negative health effect of bisphenol A, a complete EU ban could still not be obtained. Critics doubt whether the EU has decided free of lobby interests. The everyday chemical is still used in many products as a plasticizer. Particularly questionable is the use of the substance in children's products. For example, bisphenol A can also be found in baby bottles, pacifiers and drinking bottles. Several studies suggest that bisphenol A favors cardiovascular disease, leads to infertility in both women and men, and increases the risk of type II diabetes. Even the Federal Environmental Agency has warned against the use of the harmful chemical during the last year. But it was apparently not enough for a ban.

Koch warned that such questionable substances do not belong in the sensitive area of the oral cavity. The safety of the patients must always proceed, said the deputy GZM chairman. In this context, Koch recalled the discussion about the harmful consequences of amalgam, which was held several years ago. In contrast, the discussion about bisphenol-A should not be as protracted as amalgam, Koch warned. „For years, many specialists and professionals have denied that amalgam has a negative impact on patient health despite clear evidence. A similar lengthy discussion should not exist now when using bisphenol A..“ (Sb)
