Cheap strawberry jam does well in the test
Even inexpensive strawberry jam convinces in the test
05/24/2012
Stiftung Warentest recently tested 15 strawberry jams, 14 strawberry jams and three light products. Surprising test result: Products from discounters can compete with expensive branded products. In addition, the consumer advocates came to the conclusion that a high fruit content does not always speak for much fruit flavor.
Strawberry jam extra has higher fruit content
Who likes to eat fruit jam should, when buying on the addition „Fruit jam extra“ pay attention, because this indicates, according to Stiftung Warentest on a higher fruit content. All tested strawberry jams had a fruit content of 50 to 55 percent, with 45 percent prescribed. Normal jams must have at least 35 percent fruit content. Stiftung Warentest reports that the cheap products from Lidl, Aldi, Rewe and Edeka can compete with expensive branded products. Only the strawberry jam extra by Netto, Norma and the Landliebe jam would with the rating „satisfying“ fall out of the frame, report the consumer advocates.
Strawberry fruit spreads are all about processing
The secret of a good strawberry fruit spread lies according to Stiftung Warentest in the processing of fruits. This was especially successful with the fruit spread Schwartau Fruttissima. The fruits would be heated only briefly and therefore retain their aroma. The fruit spread is the only one of the tested products that needs to be stored in the refrigerator. Overall, the fruit spreads also performed well. Every second test product had a fruit content of at least 70 percent. While the composition of jam is regulated in a food regulation, this is not the case with fruit spreads. They may contain more additives, but are often less sugary than jams.
The tested light products for calorie-conscious hardly differ in taste from the conventional products, so Stiftung Warentest. (Ag)
