Private health insurance rates increase by up to 60 percent

12/22/2011

Consumer consultants report numerous complaints about the massive increases in private health insurance (PKV) contributions. The consumer portal „widge“ receives many calls every day on this topic, because the contributions should be increased in 2012 by up to 40 and even 60 percent.

Why are the PKV contributions increased so much?
According to the Association of Private Health Insurance, more than 140,000 private patients would not pay their contributions. This is the main reason for the contribution increases, because the resulting contribution losses in the amount of about 500 million euros can not be compensated otherwise. However, the industry conceals that the problem has arisen only through lock-offers.

Many private health insurances advertised in the past with bargain offers, which in part praised a PKV for less than 100 euros per month. Consumers who would have been better off in the set health insurance system were convinced. But instead of the advertised low tariff, insured persons were offered the next higher tariff. In addition, according to the association, the rising brokerage commissions.

Up to 60 percent increase in private health insurance contributions
Axel Kleinlein, CEO of the Association of Insured, reported on Thursday in Henstedt-Ulzburg: „Consumers report premium increases of up to 40, sometimes even 60 percent. They are at a loss as to how they should spend their contributions in the future.“

Contact persons for affected persons are for example the consumer centers, which provide information around the topic PKV and tariff change. Michael Wortberg, insurance adviser of the consumer center of Rhineland-Palatinate criticizes: „It can not be that the mismanagement of some insurers leads to the fact that in particular older insured retirees are driven by too high contributions into financial ruin.
