Obesity in children victim of lifestyle
Overweight in children: victims of the modern lifestyle
In the industrialized countries, an increase of obese and overweight children and adolescents has been noticeable in recent decades. In a 5-year study, scientists from the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Stuttgart have now identified the social causes and provide clues to counteract the development.
The Stuttgart scientists stated that „High-energy foods are always available but also a variety of technical products that enable the coping with everyday life without great effort“. And instead of dogmatic dietary tips and behaviors, they recommend encouraging family structures in which attention to the needs of children and their needs again play a role. Because the awareness of a diet that is as natural and moderate as possible, the children should get in the socialization in the parents. The same applies to suggestions in creative self-determined outdoor play.
The fact that these socializing structures have disappeared is reflected today, among other things, in the outward appearance of children. Altogether, the Stuttgart researchers turned to the social scientist Dr. Michael Zwick outlined over 50 individual causes of overweight and obesity.
As distinctly burning, they described, „It also seeks to create permanent bodies and structures for coordinating and networking the many programs, projects and campaigns in order to create synergies and ensure their effectiveness.“ And the researchers even recommend considering compensating for the deficient family structures through a social institution. The interdisciplinary project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and other numerous partners.
For representatives of naturopathy, the results and recommendations are nothing new. They have been watching the development skeptically for a long time. In the past, they have repeatedly called for countermeasures and for their implementation a higher social acceptance and presence of their discipline in the middle of society. It remains to be hoped that the study of the Stuttgart social scientists has now got a rock rolling. (Thorsten Fischer, Naturopath Osteopathy, 27.01.2010)
