Test failed Most expensive children's toothpaste scored the worst
Especially with children, good dental care is particularly important. In addition to the right brushing technique, it also depends on the toothpaste used. However, parents do not have to spend a lot of money to protect their offspring's teeth against decay. For as the consumer protection workers of the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor (AK) have found out by a test, there is the toothpaste with the best price-performance ratio even for 85 cents per 100 ml. The most expensive product, however, received a "not satisfactory" and fell through.
Pay attention to the correct oral hygiene from the first baby tooth
As soon as the first baby teeth come, parents should start brushing their teeth on the advice of experts at their children. It is also important to have the right toothpaste, because this is to provide reliable protection against tooth decay and also have a pleasant taste. For children up to 6 years it is recommended to use only special children's toothpaste as it contains less fluoride than products for adults. According to the AK, this is not acutely hazardous to the child if swallowed once, but too high a fluoride concentration can lead to white spots on the enamel (fluorosis). Chamber of Labor tests 19 children's products
But how good are the commercially available toothpastes for children? The AK examined in the current test 12 children's toothpastes for milk teeth and 7 Junior tooth pastes with higher fluoride content for permanent teeth. The testers came to the conclusion that most of these products protect well against caries, according to the Chamber of Labor. The surprise: Expensive is not automatically better in this area. Instead, "dontodent kids" by dm (85 cents / 100 ml) was one of the cheapest products in the test, ranking first in terms of value for money. In total, seven toothpastes for children and four for juniors received the grade "very good", including e.g. "Elmex Children's Toothpaste up to 6 years", the "Signal Milk Tooth Gel Capt'n Sharky" and "Nenedent Pediatric Toothpaste with Fluoride".
Only two products failed the test, whereby even the most expensive toothpaste was affected at € 9.20 per 100 mg (Weleda children's tooth gel). Also the "Basis Sensitiv Zahngel" from "Lavera Naturkosmetik" could not convince the testers and received a "not satisfactory". (No)
