The diagnosis of cancer is a major shock to patients and relatives. All the more important is a psycho-oncological care of the cancer patient. The Cancer Information Service of the German Cancer Research Center presents a new information sheet on this topic.

Psycho-oncological care is essential
Cancer often causes severe mental health problems. Fear of possibly dying of the disease, coping with the severe pain and the very unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy and other treatments to cope with everyday life despite the stress - with these and many other concerns, cancer patients have to cope every day. No wonder that many sufferers complain of insomnia, anxiety attacks and general stress symptoms. Relatives are often overwhelmed with the situation, want to be there for those affected, although they themselves feel a great suffering.

Affected and relatives find help in psychosocial cancer counseling centers. The cancer information service of the Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum has published a list of addresses on its website. In some clinics also psycho-oncological consultations are carried out.

Cancer is not the same as cancer
Every year, about 450,000 people get cancer. But cancer is not the same as cancer. In addition, the disease can vary greatly from patient to patient. All the more important is an individual care beyond the physical complaints of those affected. In addition to counseling centers, the exchange in self-help groups for patients and relatives can be extremely helpful. (Ag)
