Bacteria found in meat: is rotten meat in the trade?
(09.07.2010) Did rotten meat enter the German market? The consumer ministry contradicts a presentation of a science magazine of the Südwestfunk (SWR). It is still not clear whether the bacteria contaminated meat has already reached the consumer.
Currently, conflicting news regarding the bacteria found in individual meats is published. The majority report a renewed "rotten meat scandal". Also the SWR science magazine "Odysso" already reported on Thursday evening, over a new meat scandal. In itself, this source for a serious reporting. But the Federal Ministry of Consumer Affairs contradicts such statements energetically. Only cold resistant bacteria had been found in 88 out of 92 examined beef samples. The bacteria belonged to the genus "Clostridium estertheticum" and are not harmful to the consumer. However, the SWR magazine creates a completely different connection. A spokesman for the German Federal Institute for Food and Food said during the show: "We have very clear indications that this meat is being put back on the market, that it will be repackaged and labeled." These statements certainly sounded like a "rotten meat scandal", because the rotten meat is deliberately put back on the shelves by the merchants in the supermarket.
However, the consumer ministry apparently does not want to hear about these indications from the Federal Institute for Food and Food. The food control authorities of the countries had "made no indication that suggest a finding of the bacterium in the trade," said a spokesman for the Ministry of Consumer Affairs "Focus Online". There had also been no complaints from consumers that could have been objected to. Why the consumer ministry so vehemently contradict the statements of the scientists of the Federal Institute of nutrition remains unclear. It was further reported that the samples of the 92 cuts of beef were not representative.
Apparently no one can give a clarifying answer to the current question of where the finds in the food trade have taken place. However, the online offer of the Max Rubner Institute (MRI) reads in a press release: "The cases of spoilage in vacuum-packed beef by cold-loving representatives of the bacterial genus Clostridium (psychrophilic clostridia) seem to be increasing in Germany as well Vacuum packaging for meat, so-called „Blown packs“. "In addition to suspected samples, commercially traded pieces of beef in vacuum packaging were also examined for their incidence, with the result that 92 out of the 92 processed beef samples were found in 88 cases, and only 12 were not." This means that clearly contaminated pieces of meat were found that have already been sold.
Although the Federal Consumer Ministry warns against the consumption of contaminated meat, but there is no danger to the health of consumers. Also, it was not a scandal, because the meat was not in the supermarket and was also not willfully umetikettiert. Well, the question still remains unclear as to whether the meat has entered the market or not. We continue to report. (Sb)
