Baby comes pregnant with the brother to the world
In India, a boy was born who was himself "pregnant"; he carried his twin in him. This medical phenomenon, called "fetus in foeto", is extremely rare. Experts still puzzle over the possible causes.
Newborn carries his twin in the belly
According to media reports, a 19-year-old mother in India gave birth to a boy carrying his twin. Already nine days before the birth an abnormality was found in the belly of the pregnant woman during a routine examination. When the baby was born, doctors found that the newborn had a male fetus seven centimeters tall and weighed 150 grams.
Fetus was surgically removed
In a re-examination after the birth Dr.. Bhavna Thorat from Bilal Hospital in Mumbra will see the bones of the upper and lower limbs of the fetus, reports the British newspaper "Mirror".
But: "The unique thing was that I could see a small head with the brain," said the radiologist.
The fetus, which was behind the healthy newborn's stomach, was surgically removed from the hospital.
"The baby is doing very well now, and the mother will feed him soon," said gynecologist Dr. Neena Nichlani.
Extremely rare phenomenon
"It's a case of monozygotic twin pregnancy, where the fetuses share a placenta and one loops around the other, stealing food from them," Dr. Nichlani.
The medical phenomenon "fetus in foeto" is a rare form of twin pregnancy. According to experts, statistically, it occurs worldwide in one of 500,000 births. Documented cases are so far only 200.
Physicians are not sure how such errors can occur in development.
In a case described in the journal "Hong Kong Medical Journal", the doctors suspect that it may have to do with several maternal abortions. The experts report there about a girl from Hong Kong, who had a baby in the belly at birth.
A case in Europe became known years ago. In 2008, a six-centimeter-long fetus was removed from the belly of a nine-year-old girl in Greece. This was reportedly partially differentiated, with long hair, spine and eyes. (Ad)
