Patients suffering from bronchial asthma but endurance sports can better control their condition than asthma sufferers who only take medicines without exercising. The German Association of Pulmonary Physicians pointed out this connection.

Sport improves asthma control
Those who regularly practice endurance sports as asthma sufferers can better control their illness than others who rely exclusively on medication. This was stated by the German Society for Pneumology and Respiratory Medicine (DGP), referring to a recent study. The study showed that patients who regularly exercised their condition and practiced sports and strength training had a significantly improved quality of life, as the pulmonologist Dr. med. Dieter Köhler of the DGP explained. Good asthma control means that typical symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain and whistling breath sounds are much more subdued and less common. Well-trained asthma patients therefore needed significantly fewer emergency medicines. There are many patients who do not achieve satisfactory asthma control despite good medication and patient training „Accordingly, suffer frequently complaints up to sudden attacks of asthma, "said the lung specialist. The new study now prove that „Endurance sport makes an important therapeutic contribution“.

Good asthma sports
Before treating asthmatics with a sport such as jogging, walking, or cycling, the treating physician should first be consulted. In a conversation, it is discussed which sport is most suitable for the patient. The pulmonologist knows exactly which discipline is best, without overstraining your breathing and risking a seizure. At the beginning, an asthma sports group could be considered, which is offered in many clubs of larger cities. In addition to the asthma sports group are especially cyclical sports such as jogging, inline skating, cycling, swimming, hiking or cross-country skiing. (Sb)
