May 15 is World Celiac Day.

(12.05.2010) On the occasion of the celiac World Day on 15 May, the German Celiac Society e.V. invites to this year since 8 May with events in various cities, under the motto „Celiac disease - already discovered?“ to inform about symptoms, diagnosis and possible solutions to celiac disease.

Celiac disease, which is also known as (native) sprue in adults, is a familial indigestion associated with severe diarrhea and fatty stools. Background to today's knowledge is a genetically created gluten or Gliadinunverträglichkeit that leads to damage to the small intestine villi and thus the disturbed uptake of vital nutrients through the intestinal mucosa. Gluten / gliadin occurs as gluten in a number of cereals, including wheat, oats, spelled, rye and barley.

In the long term, intolerance to intestinal complaints with flatulence leads to mineral, protein and vitamin deficiency symptoms, chapped corners of the mouth, inflammation of the tongue and growth disorders in children. Frequently the affected families already have a long ordeal at the time of diagnosis. This year's events are therefore intended primarily to sensitize the population to the disruption of themselves and others at an early stage „discover“.

Actions are offered in different cities. After a gluten-free brunch last Sunday, the Kurverwaltung Scheidegg organizes, for example, until 16 May their „Gluten-Free-Scheidegger Active Week“ with accompanying program for celiac sufferers. In Bonn, the DGZ invites you to attend a doctor-patient seminar at the Wissenschaftszentrum Bonn on May 15, between 10 am and 4 pm, where lectures and information booths await those who are interested. In addition, regional discussion groups open the doors for newcomers and the curious.
