21 kilo tumor successfully removed

Thuringian doctors have in a 71-year-old patient a tumor with a weight of 21 kilograms and a diameter of 37 centimeters away. The patient had turned to his family doctor because of a massive increase in abdominal circumference. He immediately referred him to the Klinikum Altenburger Land, where a huge tumor became visible during the examination in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

To remove the giant tumor, the doctors had only the option of surgery. „Of course, we have carefully informed the patient of the facts and the risks prior to this particular operation“, explained the chief physician of the clinic for general, visceral and vascular surgery, Dr. med. med. Rigo Voigt and supplemented „Even at university tumor centers, a tumor of this magnitude is a rarity.“
Complicated removal of the giant tumor
The tumor of the patient grew so massive that the 71-year-old noticed a steadily thickening belly. The size of the subsequently discovered ulcer was nevertheless surprising. The operation was correspondingly complicated. The procedure lasted around three hours. med. Rigo Voigt was supported by two other surgeons. The physicians faced a particular challenge in view of the size of the tumor, since the procedure was associated with involvement of the upper abdominal organs such as the pancreas, liver and spleen. Also was the „Tumor very close to the central vessels of the intestinal blood flow and was difficult to solve at these sites“, reports the hospital Altenburger Land. Under the given conditions, maintaining the ventilation system had not been an everyday challenge. Overall, the removal of the giant tumor was successful and this could be completely removed, the message of the hospital. Complications had not occurred in the course of the operation and the patient had meanwhile been able to leave the hospital again.
Reports about huge tumors are increasing
Overall, the reports of such giant tumors have increased significantly in recent months. In Berlin, for example, an operation was already carried out in 2009, in which the physician of the supervising private clinic company „Capital Health Hospital Group“ The 35-year-old patient from Saudi Arabia removed about 18 kilograms of a malignant bone tumor from the pelvis in five operations. The patient weighed only 37 kilograms. In August, physicians at the University of Cologne released a woman from a more than 14 kilogram ovarian tumor, followed in early September by the removal of a 18-kilogram tumor of the uterus in a 52-year-old female patient at the Clemenshospital in Münster. In October, physicians at the University of Dresden removed a 28-kilogram tumor from the abdominal cavity of a senior citizen. However, all of these reports of giant tumors appear harmless considering the early year surgery by an international team of doctors in Vietnam, which involved removing a 90-kilogram tumor from a patient over 13 hours of surgery. The giant boil on the leg had accompanied the patient all his life and had grown continuously. (Fp)
