29/08/2012
Last week at the University of Cologne, a woman who lost more than 14 kilograms of ovarian cancer was removed. The procedure went well and the patient is on the way to recovery, according to the communication from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University of Cologne.
The tumor was more than 14 kilograms in weight and about 60 centimeters in diameter, the largest ovarian tumor so far, the doctors at the University of Cologne have removed. „After about three hours of surgery, the patient recovered quickly, so she could be transferred back to the gynecological ward“, reports the clinic. The intervention was performed by the director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Prof. Dr. med. Peter Mallmann, made.
Patient felt well despite the huge tumor
The patient had previously noticed little of the huge ovarian tumor. Although she had observed a slight increase in weight and an increase in the abdominal circumference for about six months, she felt otherwise well. After a computed tomography by the Institute of Radiological Diagnostics of the University of Cologne, the doctors first expressed the suspicion of a giant ovarian tumor. This impression was confirmed according to the notification of the clinic in subsequent ultrasound examinations. The treating physicians came therefore to the decision of an operational distance.
Gigantic ovarian tumor removed in 3-hour operation
„As already assumed in the diagnosis, a gigantic ovarian tumor appeared during the procedure.“, reports Professor Mallmann. The tumor has filled the entire abdomen and „from the small pelvis to the upper abdomen“ extends. As a result, according to the medical profession, other organs were displaced and obstructed. As part of the three-hour operation of the „Exceptionally large tumor can be removed by the team as a whole and without complications“, so the message of the University of Cologne. The patient is currently on the road to recovery and could probably leave the clinic in the coming days. It is quoted in the current communication as saying: „I'm so happy that the operation went so well. Now I am relieved in a double sense and look forward to returning home soon.“ According to the doctors, the ovarian tumor was 14.3 kilograms and had a diameter of about 60 centimeters.
18 kilograms weighed the largest so far in Germany distant tumor
According to the director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology „Fortunately, this extraordinarily large tumor is not a malignant change, but a benign, so-called mucinous cystoma.“ Professor Mallmann describes the latter as „Cysts emanating from the ovary, which are usually filled with water and mucus, and displace the adjacent organs when the size increases.“ Cause are often closed gland ducts through which the precipitated liquid can no longer flow. To form „ever-increasing cysts, but rarely reach such proportions“, explained the doctor. In fact, a 14-kilogram tumor is extremely uncommon, but in Berlin in 2009 an operation was performed in which a much larger tumor was removed. The doctors of the supervising private hospital company „Capital Health Hospital Group“ At that time, in five operations, they removed around 18 kilograms of a malignant bone tumor from the pelvis of a 35-year-old female patient from Saudi Arabia. The affected person weighed only 37 kilograms. This was the largest tumor ever removed in Germany. (Fp)
