13 Christmas Stollen Dining Test Halfway through

13 Christmas stollen in the test: Real "whispering tunnels" rather rare
18/11/2013
To make a real Christstollen, you need enough time and ingredients. This is too much for many people and they prefer to use a finished Christmas cake from the supermarket. So that you can be sure of the abundance of offers to catch even the tastiest, has the consumer magazine „Good advice“ 13 Christmas stollen tested. A total of three times only the grade was awarded "good" or "very good", three studs even fell through.
Stollen from bakeries, supermarkets and discounters
The jury included the old master Siegfried Heller from Dresden, the food chemist André Bernatzky, master baker Rudolf Maaß and good-council author Matthias Ohnsmann. A total of 13 pastries were tested, coming from bakeries, supermarkets and discounters.
Real "whispering tunnels" rather rare
A really real one „Flüsterstollen“, was only found once among the tested products. The original Dresdener Christstollen from the bakery Rene Krause, had really earned the name, according to the jury. You can order it on the Internet at "dresdner-christstollen24.de". Only for the unclean ground there were deductions. "Tastes like marzipan, although no one is in it," said Old Master Heller to this product. The raisins are also distributed evenly throughout the cake, which is a crucial quality criterion. With 12,45 euros plus shipping but not cheap. Not necessarily cheaper (16.99 euros), but with the note „very well“ was the original Dresden organic Christstollen by Dr. med. Quendt rated. The "wonderful light brown color", as well as its buttery taste was praised by Maaß and convinced the jury.
Prize-winner of Emil Reimann
If that is too expensive, you can rely on the original Dresdner Christstollen from the Dresden company Emil Reimann. He was the only one to receive the grade „Well“ and is available at Kaisers for 5.99 euros. He recommends "good advice" as a "top price performance product". The jury was struck by the smell and also the distribution of the raisins. For the predicate „Flüsterstollen“ but it was not enough. "Is a bit too dry, a little too strong baked," found Stollen expert Heller.
Solid midfield for discounters
With the note „three“ the tunnels of the discount stores Netto, Norma, Aldi-Nord and Lidl were rated and thus landed in midfield and are priced at 2.89 euros per 750 grams. Main points of criticism were the lack of aromas, an unclean soil and an uneven distribution of the raisins. The taste was according to the test result but still fine.
Bahlsen and Oebel are at the bottom
Edeka's Butterstalk has earned the jury of "Good Advice" because of its unsightly appearance, its slightly fermented, sour smell and its scratchy taste „five“ receive.
Only the butter Premiumstollen of Bahlsen and the Cologne Butterstollen the pastry Oebel have even worse cut and received the grade „six“. In this product, the testers liked the greasy coating and the artificial taste. "Looks sterile, it lacks life," said Heller. So if you are looking for a delicious Christmas stollen, you might want to dig deeper into your wallet. (Fr)
