The eyes form a highly sensitive sensory organ that serves to perceive light stimuli and transmits corresponding impulses via the optic nerve to the visual center in the brain, where the impulses are processed into images. Often the eye is exclusively associated with the eyeball, whose anterior area is marked by the cornea, conjunctiva, iris and pupil. Behind the pupil is the lens, which serves for focusing. The interior of the eyeball is formed by the so-called glass body. On the opposite side of the pupil is the retina in the eyeball, which converts the light stimuli into nerve impulses. It is already part of the visual pathways, which also include the optic nerve and the optic tract. Also part of the eye are the externally visible eyelids and eyelashes as well as the hidden lacrimal ways.
The eyeball is extremely sensitive, which is why it is particularly protected by surrounding muscle, bone and connective tissue structures and on the other hand a regular moistening of the surface by the tear fluid is required to flush out dust and other foreign bodies. In this case, the eyelid reflex - which is also intended to prevent the direct penetration of foreign bodies into the eye - plays a special role. The cornea on the front of the eyeball can be relatively easily damaged or scratched by sharp objects, but also small fragments or grains of sand. In addition to impaired eyesight here is often an unpleasant scratching at the eyelid conclusion. In the worst case, not only the cornea, but also the rest of the eyeball (for example, the vitreous body) is damaged by the penetration of objects with greater force. As a rule, an operative procedure for the rescue of the eye is required as soon as possible, although this too can not always prevent blindness.
In addition to damage from invading foreign bodies, numerous diseases can lead to eye damage. Here, for example, the conjunctivitis and corneal inflammation should be mentioned, which are mainly noticeable by eye redness and itchy eyes. However, the wide spectrum of eye inflammations also includes inflammatory eye diseases, which in the worst case are associated with complete loss of vision. In addition to the inflammations, other possible eye diseases include, for example, cataracts and cataracts. Also, retinal damage such as macular degeneration or retinal detachment may occur. In addition, optic nerve disorders sometimes occur, which in turn are associated with impaired vision. In general, in case of sudden vision problems, a visit to the ophthalmologist is recommended, as quite serious illnesses can trigger the symptoms.
In the eyes, sometimes also reflect internal diseases, such as in the case of liver disease and the subsequent development of jaundice (jaundice). Yellow eyes are a possible indication of organ damage. In the natural medicine the connections between the health condition of the patients and the eyes are taken up particularly in the context of the so-called Irisdiagnose. This not entirely undisputed method is used primarily to determine the general constitution, but also for the determination of acute complaints, the iris diagnosis is applied. (Fp)
