blood donation

blood donation /
Blood donations are still an elementary pillar of medicine. Because patients who need a blood transfusion, are dependent on the availability of sufficient blood products. For this purpose, the blood collected in blood donations is specially prepared and stored for use. A synthetic production of the blood is not yet possible. Voluntary blood donations are therefore essential. These are carried out by various blood donation organizations. As a donor, theoretically all adults of legal age are admitted in Germany, as long as no health exclusion criteria exist. These are however varied and range from a too low body weight of the donor (under 50 kilograms) up to a possible drug dependence or HIV infections. In a preliminary investigation, therefore, the suitability as a donor is determined. If this is given, about half a liter of blood can be withdrawn per donor when donating blood. (Fp)
