supplementary diet
Supplementary feeding is the feeding of babies with first diet meals. While infants should only be breastfed (or given baby milk as a substitute) by the age of about half a year, a gradual switch to normal diet is then required. This needs a certain transitional phase, in which the babies with supplements are gradually accustomed to food intake. The child should be allowed sufficient time to get used to the new food. Initially, therefore, a baby porridge made of only one ingredient is appropriate and only a week later, another ingredient should be included. Beikost is to start at the earliest at the age of five months and at the latest from the seventh month of life and in addition to the bread meals, the children are still breastfed - but in a correspondingly reduced extent.
