The spotted lungwort

The spotted or true lungwort grows in Germany, Austria and Switzerland often on the edge of the forest as well as in deciduous forests, but also in city parks and gardens. It is a Raubblattgewächs such as the borage, the Adder head or comfrey, which are also considered medicinal plants. Related species such as the dark lungwort and the soft lungwort are of no importance as medicinal plants.

The true Lungekraut grows up to 30 cm in height, is perennial and forms woody roots. The lancet-shaped leaves are covered with white spots.

blossom

The true lungwort is a early bloomer and shows its red, purple or blue calyx from March. There are several flowers on each stem, which are reminiscent of bells. Lungwort is available in various breeding forms, which differ mainly by the color of the flowers such as "Cambrige Blue". The fruit knot forms brown seeds with a characteristic "pointed cap".

Location

As a forest plant, the lungwort likes it shady to partially shaded, to nutrient-rich with permeable humus such as deciduous forest soil and slightly damp. If the soil is rich in clay you can loosen it up with gravel or sand. The best place is under deciduous trees that are not in the blazing sun.

cultivation

The early bloomer should be sowed in March. As a cold germ, the plant needs frost to germinate. At the same time, lungwort is a light germ, so the seeds should not be deeper than about 0.5 cm below the earth's crust. Between the individual plants should be a distance of up to 20 cm.

If you pull lungwort on the balcony, it should be oriented north or west, otherwise the plant will become too much sun. A pot should have a diameter of 20 cm, so that the roots find room.

proliferation

Besides seeds, lungwort can also be multiplied by division. That's pretty easy. You only have to split the root with a sharp spade in spring or summer and plant the pieces separately.

Fertilize and water

As a forest plant, lungwort thanks for annual fertilization in spring with compost and / or nettle. The soil must not dry out, as well as lungwort does not tolerate waterlogging. In the shade, weekly watering is appropriate in the summer, in case the rain stops.

overwinter

Lungwort in medicine

Lungwort has been used as a medicinal plant since the Middle Ages. But then there were superstitious reasons - it was about the imagined effect of analogies. The leaves were reminiscent of a lung, so Hildegard von Bingen suggested the "lungwurz" in Causa et Curae as a remedy for lung diseases. Later, it should help in wound healing and also in women's complaints, as a powder and as a tincture of tincture.

Considering lungwort as a medicinal herb is not just superstition. So it contains saponins, tannins and silica, these dissolve mucus, relieve irritants and pull together. Dried lungwort to tea brewed, is therefore a real home remedy for cough, hoarseness, diarrhea and bladder problems.

tea

For a tea, pour 2 teaspoons of dried lungwort with a quarter of a liter of hot water and let it draw for 8-10 minutes, drinking 3 cups per day. (Dr. Utz Anhalt)
