E. coli

E. coli /
Colobacteria (not to be confused with coliform bacteria) are colloquially termed intestinal bacteria of the genus Escherichia coli (E. coli), which, although often associated with health impairments, are not harmful per se. For example, many coliforms play useful roles as vitamin producers. However, some highly infectious agents are known to cause severe gastrointestinal disease. Among them, the so-called toxin-forming E-coli bacteria, which can also cause damage to the kidneys to a potentially fatal kidney failure, as was the case in some patients in the so-called EHEC epidemic in 2011. The Kolibaktieren were probably spread over contaminated fenugreek seeds. In general, infection with coliform bacteria is often via the oral intake of the pathogens with the food. Contaminated drinking water is also a possible infection route in many parts of the world - but not in Germany. (Fp)
