Science Cleaning should be a health hazard for men?
There are very few people who claim to be happy to clean. Men, in particular, often shy away from keeping their household clean - and that may be good for their health. For a new study showed that men who clean, a higher risk of death have.
Cleaning harms your health
Who keeps his house or apartment clean, not only provides a cozy home, but also does his character something good. After all, many calories are consumed when brushing. However, cleaning seems to be less suitable for men's health. On the contrary, cleaning men have a higher risk of dying, according to a new study from Belgium.
Higher risk of death among male cleaners
The study by the University of Brussels found that the risk of death among male cleaners is around 45 percent higher than that of office workers.
For females, however, the risk of death is only 16 percent higher than for the average female worker.
The results of the scientific study have now been published in the journal "International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health".
For the doctoral thesis of the scientist Laura van den Borre, the death data of approximately 260,000 Belgian cleaners between 1991 and 2001 were analyzed.
Men protect themselves too little
The researcher also provides reasons for the increased risk. For example, according to van den Boore, men use less common respiratory masks and protective gloves.
In addition, they frequently use cleaning agents incorrectly and misjudge the mix of chemicals.
Because of this carelessness or ignorance, male cleaners are at greater risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and pneumonia, as well as for coronary and blood vessel diseases in the brain.
In the private household, the risks are even higher than at work, since home-based cleaning products are used even more safely, according to van den Boore.
Sick by detergent
The fact that cleaning agents can cause illness has already been shown by other studies.
For example, scientists from the University of Melbourne reported on the negative health effects of fragrances in cleaning and other budget funds.
Many such products are, according to experts, without any great benefit. According to household and environmental experts, three cleaners are enough for household cleaning. (Ad)
