40 minutes daily exercise protect against cancer and diabetes
Generally, most people should already know that exercise is good for our health. Researchers have now found that 40 minutes of extra walking a day reduces our risk for cancer and diabetes, and reduces the time we spend in hospitals throughout our lives.

The researchers from the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Newcastle found that an additional 40 minutes of exercise a day was enough to reduce the risk of cancer and hospitalization. The physicians published the results of their study in the journal "Medical Journal of Australia".

Already 1,000 steps a day have a positive effect on your health
In general, physicians often advise their patients to exercise more and be more physically active. The current study found that people walking about 4,500 to 8,800 steps a day on foot cut the total number of days spent in hospital and also reduce their personal cancer risk. The physicians said in the study, already 1,000 additional steps a day would cause those affected to reduce their lifetime spent in bed in a hospital time by 9 percent. Every form of movement is better than no movement at all. And even more exercise is even better, explains the author. Ben Ewald.

Pedometer measures the number of steps of the subjects
Dr. Ewald and his research team recruited more than 2,100 subjects over the age of 55 for their study. With the help of a so-called pedometer, the doctors recorded the steps of the subjects over a period of one week. The investigations were carried out between 2005 and 2007 for one week each. Thereafter, the hospital data of the participants were collected and evaluated by March 2015, ie for a period of eight years, the scientists explain.

Variable lifestyle factors were excluded
The physicians used statistical adjustments in their study to rule out the variable lifestyle factors. These included, for example, the level of education, sex, the number of comorbidities (such as angina, heart attack, asthma), the number of drugs taken, smoking and alcohol consumption.

Increased activity leads to fewer hospital stays
The results of the study showed that the more active people (more than 4,300 steps a day or about three kilometers) spent about one-third less in hospital each year during the eight-year follow-up visit, the authors explain.

Activity protects against all types of diseases
Considering the cost of having a day in the hospital, higher levels of activity can save the healthcare system a lot, say the doctors. One reason to motivate more people to become more active Ewald. In addition, higher step counts were associated with less time in the hospital when it came to cancer or diabetes. There were generally fewer hospitalizations for cancer in the more active group, the researchers explain. So you could say that activity protects against all kinds of diseases, including cancer, 'the researchers concluded.

Do more daily activities on foot
An average person walks about 6,000 steps a day, Dr. Ewald. To reach a higher pace, people need to increase their casual activities. It is not necessary that those affected go a long way at a stretch. The necessary activity could also be distributed throughout the day. For example, take your children to school instead of driving with the author or if you want to go shopping, walk to the shops and leave your car behind, experts suggest.

More exercise protects your health and improves your fitness
For example, people often meet for coffee, but it would be better if those concerned took a walk together and talked by the way, the scientists explain. This has additional benefits. And your overall fitness will increase even more if you go jogging or running every now and then, say the researchers.

Try to reach 8,000 steps a day
Increased intensity is great if, for example, you are able to walk or jog. However, if you are not able to do so, walking normally leads to health benefits. Ideally, people should reach 10,000 steps a day, but 8,000 steps are already a good start, the physician adds.

Improved city planning could increase the overall activity
The researchers also mentioned in their report that limited parking and improved urban planning could help improve community physical activity. (As)
