Winter skin care: a lot of fat and some sunscreen

07/01/2015

The winter weather with its icy winds and snow mean stress for our skin. The dry heating air also contributes to this. Skin problems increase during the cold season. With the right care you can prevent this well.

Constant change of cold and warm air
Even if the skin has to go through all sorts of things year-round, it's especially the winter that is bad for her. There are several reasons why the complexion gets out of balance during the cold season. In particular, the constant change of cold air outdoors to dry heating heat in the house makes the facial skin to create. In addition, the sebaceous glands stop their work from temperatures around eight degrees. This is a natural precaution from times when there were neither warm rooms nor effective care. On the surface of the skin, liquid can lead to microscopic frostbite.

Dry skin needs moisturizing care
According to a report by the news agency dpa, Stefan Duve, a dermatologist from Munich, explained that particularly dry skin needs moisturizing care. This is a must if you are in warm rooms or especially outdoors. „For example, those who love long walks should protect the complexion from wind, cold and sun - especially in the mountains“, so the doctor. The dermatologist also recommends that the skin be treated once or twice a week with a moisturizing mask. „And do not forget the daily night cream.“

Protect the eye area from environmental influences
The complexion is relatively easy to care for eye areas, lips, neck and décolleté, it is a little more difficult. These stepchildren of care are often neglected anyway, in winter this can have unpleasant consequences. As the skin around the eyes is particularly thin, it is very prone to the famous wrinkles. „This is why hyaluronic acid based care products are a good choice, which have a smoothing effect and at the same time have moisturizing substances“, said Anna Mokosch, specialist in dermatology at Medical Skin Center Dusseldorf, opposite the agency. The expert also advises to protect the eye area in winter with antioxidants from environmental influences. „Especially vitamins C and E help here“, so Mokosch. „What is often forgotten: take enough liquid. This can also be herbal tea during the cold season.“

Sunscreen for the lips
Very sensitive to cold, the lips react. Their delicate skin is particularly thin compared to the facial skin and has no subcutaneous fatty tissue. Dermatologists therefore advise sunblockers, which protect the lips from the cold, but also from the sun. Such products are also available in pen form. Your sun protection factor (LSF) - English term SPF (Sun Protection Factor) - is at least 50. Mokosch added: „Such a sunblock is not only useful for the lips, but also for the game around the eyes“.

Care of neck and décolleté
The care of neck and décolleté is generally given little attention. Especially there, however, the traces of the aging process quickly become noticeable, since the skin is quite thin there and has no subcutaneous fatty tissue that could act as a cushion. „As a basic care, moisturizing creams and masks are recommended“, so Duve. „For this you should do without long, and possibly even comfortably hot baths, because they dry out the skin additionally.“ In addition, it is often forgotten that the constant contact with the wool of a scarf or turtleneck pullover irritates the delicate skin on the neck and décolleté, especially if the wool scrapes something. „In such cases, it makes sense to use cotton“, says Duve.

Unpleasant red spots
Some people develop unsightly red spots in winter, so-called dryness eczema. As explained by the dermatologist Heiko Grimme from Stuttgart, people who naturally suffer from rather dry skin tended to do so. You can help prevent the switch to a lipidhaltige, so fatty cream, as fat prevents the evaporation process on the skin. If the eczema has not progressed too far, usually an ointment for especially dry skin helps. Otherwise, a cortisone cream from the dermatologist can promote healing.

Healthy nutrition protects the skin
Even a balanced diet protects against dry skin. Fresh fruits and vegetables provide the body with essential vitamins, trace minerals and antioxidants. In addition, a lot should be drunk, preferably water, fruit spritzers, fruit or herbal teas. The cells also get moisture from inside. Alcohol consumption and smoking strain sensitive skin. Furthermore, stress and lack of sleep can disturb the delicate balance of the skin. Through a lot of exercise in the fresh air, the circulation of the skin is promoted, thus preventing dry skin. Humidifiers or water bowls can help against the dry heating air. (Ad)
