How good is the hearing of the Germans?
Healthy Hearing Index analyzes the hearing of Germans
"Young people in particular like to hear loud music and can harm their ears," emphasizes Dr. med. Christian Graf, Head of Prevention at Barmer Krankenkasse, in a recent press release on the first results of the "Healthy Hearing Index". The index was initiated by Barmer together with the company Mimi Hearing Technologies.
First evaluations of the "Healthy Hearing Index" will be presented on the occasion of the "World Day of Hearing" on 3 March. "The index should raise awareness of the topic for a good reason"; so Dr. Graf. Because "the number of young people with hearing problems is growing rapidly," confirms Prof. Dr. med. Birgit Mazurek, CEO of the German Tinnitus Foundation Charité, in a press release by Barmer.

Statistical data was collected and evaluated with the apps "Mimi Hörtest" and "Mimi Music" to create the index. A nationwide average was determined for each age group. The two apps are used to adapt the music playback on the smartphone to individual strengths and weaknesses of the hearing.
Regional differences in hearing
According to Barmer, the analysis of the data revealed clear differences in hearing per region. For example, people in Oldenburg would perceive noises, music and talks about five decibels better than in Rostock. In the comparison of the federal states, the people in Schleswig-Holstein showed the best hearing and in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern the hearing was the worst. However, the fluctuations in hearing by a few decibels are still no cause for panic, emphasizes Dr. med. earl.
A sound approach to hearing is required
It was particularly important to sensitize young people to the topic of hearing, Dr. Count next. "We support the 'World Day of Hearing' because hearing protection is one of our key tasks," adds Prof. Dr. med. Mazurek. The aim is to reach as many people as possible and to encourage them to be more careful with their own hearing. The ear forms a complex organ and contains some of our most sensitive sensory cells, which should be protected.
However, the scientists also have good news. Thus, the first evaluation of the Healthy Hearing Index shows that Germany scores better on hearing in international comparison than many other countries in Europe. However, given the growing impairment of hearing in adolescents, only a small consolation. (Fp)
