How a Crystal Meth addiction is effectively treatable
Each year around 3,000 people in Germany are conspicuous because of the consumption of the synthetic psychodrug "Crystal Meth". But the "dependence on crystal meth is curable," says the Federal Drug Commissioner. Now for the first time recommendations for the treatment of addicts were published.
Consumption of crystal meth is no longer limited to individual regions
In Germany, about 3,000 people are conspicuous every year because of their crystal consumption, reports the Federal Government Drugs Commissioner, Marlene Mortler (CSU), in a press release. Consumption of the drug is therefore no longer limited only to the border regions to the Czech Republic. The fact that the intoxicant is consumed there particularly often, was also reflected in the number of damaged by Crystal Meth babies. Now a guideline has been published to help treat addicts.
Drug leads to aggression and delusions
The Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) writes on its website that the drug promises to handle stress and pressure with ease and, moreover, to be able to accomplish more in less time.
But the other side of the intoxicant is "aggression, restlessness, and delusions," as the Drug Commissioner's message goes.
Especially since the drug discovery in the Green Bundestag MP Volker Beck is repeatedly pointed out how harmful to health Crystal Meth in reality.
Harmful drug
Crystal Meth is considered to be very stimulating. After intoxication, however, often listlessness, sleep disorders, anxiety and depression. Consumers often take additional drugs or increase the dose.
There is a risk of health problems such as palpitations, sweating, muscle spasms and dizziness as well as long-term physical effects such as brain damage, circulatory disorders, tooth loss, chronic skin inflammation ("Crystal Acne") or kidney and liver damage.
Particularly dangerous is the psychological dependence, which can lead to anxiety and panic attacks, hallucinations, eating disorders and an increased risk of suicide.
Treatment at the highest medical level
"The consumption of Crystal Meth has become a real challenge in many regions of Germany in recent years," said Marlene Mortler. The new medical guideline "should enable treatment at the highest medical level in Germany in the future," said the Drug Commissioner. "The good news is that the dependence on crystal meth is curable."
"The aim of the guideline is to enable better care for sufferers and more action safety for therapeutically active personnel in clinical practice on the basis of substance-specific studies," reports the Medical Center for Quality in Medicine (AOQ), which co-authored the guideline Experts worked out.
World's first treatment guideline
Dr. Josef Mischo, President of the Medical Association of the Saarland and Chairman of the Working Group Addiction and Drugs of the German Medical Association, commented: "For the preparation of the recommendations for action, we have reviewed and evaluated the entire internationally available scientific literature on the topic. From the results, we have prepared a total of 135 recommendations, in particular for the treatment of acute and post-acute care as well as the treatment of comorbidities and special patient groups. "
"In Germany, we have the first treatment guideline for patients with methamphetamine-related disorders that meet the highest quality criteria of an" S3 guideline "," says Mischo. (Ad)
