„As of 12 September 2012, 41 cases (nine laboratory confirmed cases and 32 very likely cases) from the Haut-Uélé district in the Orientale province were reported. Eighteen of these cases were fatal (5 confirmed and 13 very likely cases). 18 health care workers are among the very likely cases. In addition, 28 suspected cases were reported, which are now being investigated“, informs WHO in their latest update on the situation in the Congo on their website. „The location is very, very serious“, also said WHO spokesman Eugene Kabambi on Thursday. The number of deaths has increased in the villages of Isiro and Viadana within a week to 31, more than doubling. In August, Ebola fever had already caused 16 deaths in neighboring Uganda.
Ebola is caused by the Ebola virus and is fatal in up to 90 percent of cases. The infectious disease begins with flu-like symptoms. In the course of the disease hemorrhagic fever (high fever with bleeding), disorders of the kidney and liver function with edema, internal bleeding, bleeding into the tissue (formation of bruises on the skin), blood in the urine and stool, shock, convulsions, paralysis, Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and circulatory collapse.
