Which is why children should wear sunglasses
It is clear to most parents that children should be protected from the sun from an early age. However, some neglect the protection of the eyes. Experts point out how important it is that even the little ones wear sunglasses.
Even children should wear sunglasses
If children are out in the summer, they should always be well protected from the sun. Depending on the duration of stay and the intensity of the sun's rays, sunscreen has to be applied several times and in abundance. But it is often forgotten that the eyes need protection against UV rays. Wearing sunglasses also has long term effects. It helps to "maintain" the eyesight.
Healthy lifestyle with a vitamin-rich diet
Even if you often have "eagle eyes" at a young age: at some point your eyesight diminishes. But every person can prevent the age-related vision loss, explains the German Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (DBSV) in a statement.
"These included, for example, the wearing of sunglasses from childhood, nicotine abstinence and a healthy lifestyle with a vitamin-rich diet," write the experts.
Just how important good nutrition is for healthy eyes was demonstrated last year in one case in the USA.
There, a 14-year-old patient is almost blind due to one-sided nutrition. The boy had been feeding almost exclusively on bread, cola, chicken and potatoes since he was five years old. This malnutrition led to a vitamin deficiency that almost cost him his eyesight.
Have your eyes checked regularly
From 40 it is advisable, according to DBSV, to have his eyes regularly checked by the ophthalmologist.
"Early signs of eye damage, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes or high blood pressure, are initially not noticed by patients themselves," explained Prof. Dr. med. med. Focke Ziemssen, Deputy Director of the University Eye Hospital Tübingen.
If diseases are not detected and treated early, eye damage can occur that can not be reversed. According to the experts, many older people unnecessarily lose their eyesight. (Ad)
