Contact lenses are hardly recognizable in the eye and after a settling-in time usually no longer noticeable. This has many advantages, but can also be detrimental if the lenses accidentally remain in the eye too long. This is especially problematic for daily lenses, because an exceeded wearing time can affect the eyesight and cause inflammation. The professional association of ophthalmologists of Germany (BVA) informs, what should be considered with the daily lenses.
Excessive wearing of daily lenses favors corneal infections
Day contact lenses should not be longer in the eye than recommended by the manufacturer. „Excessive wearing of non-suitable lenses regularly leads to a significant oxygen deficit in the cornea“, warns Dorothea Kuhn, head of the contact lens department at the BVA. „The cornea swells, causing a loss of vision.“ There is also a health risk. „It creates a moist chamber under the lens - similar to an incubator - and thus increases the risk of infections of the cornea“, so the expert.
Especially in the carnival, when so-called Fun- or Crazylinsen worn by many jecken, there is an increased risk of inflammation. This is because the colorful color of the „cats-“ or „Zombie eyes“ The pores of the lenses are blocked. „Therefore, there is quasi danger of suffocation for the cornea“, explains Kuhn. To protect the cornea, such lenses should only be kept as short as possible in the eye. In traffic, they can also limit the visibility.
Always clean contact lenses thoroughly
Regardless of the type of contact lenses, hygiene is very important. So the lenses should be cleaned with special solution before and each wearing and the contact lens care product should be renewed daily. In addition, the trays should only be used with clean, freshly washed hands and removed. Otherwise you risk germs getting into the eye.
If the contact lenses can not be removed after long wear, this is usually because they have dried out. According to Kuhn, sterile tear replacement fluid, which drops into the eye several times, then helps. By the means the lenses are moistened and elastic again, so that they can be easily removed.
