World No Tobacco Day Stop smoking works great
The motto of this year's World No Tobacco Day is "E-Cigarettes and E-Shishas: Chemistry for the Lungs!" Attention is drawn to the health hazards of smoking on the day of action, which takes place on 31 May every year. Many smokers would like to give up their vice, but always find excuses. An expert gives tips on how to do it.
World No Tobacco Day warns against consumption of e-cigarettes
In 1987, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched World No Tobacco Day. Every year since May 31, it has been alerted to the dangers of smoking, this year under the motto: "E-cigarettes and e-shishas: chemistry for the lungs!" Only recently was a study presented that shows young people trying more and more e-cigarettes. Health experts warn that electronic vapor can be the gateway to tobacco use. And smoking is a major threat to health. Among other things, smoking favors 12 types of cancer, including lung cancer, pancreatic cancer and colon cancer, cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke, diabetes, arterial diseases such as atherosclerosis (arteriosclerosis) or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD (smoker's lung). According to a study, many smokers would want to give up their vice, but have concerns about withdrawal symptoms. However, the fear of stopping is unfounded, given some tips. An expert explains how to stop.
Why the quit is so heavy
Prof. Felix Herth, Medical Director and Chief Physician of Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine at the Thoraxklinik in Heidelberg, spoke in an interview with the "Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung" about how smokers can successfully stop. He first explained why smoking cessation is so severe: "It's an addiction. And nicotine is the strongest addictive substance we know - much stronger in addiction, for example, than heroin. "Nevertheless, it is possible to give up the vice. The expert referred to a comparison of the different procedures and explained that "reducing is inferior to the direct final line. If you manage to get rid of the cigarettes completely, you have a much higher chance of being a non-smoker after one year than of cutting them down piecemeal. "With the latter method, people often cheat themselves and then smoke ten instead the planned five cigarettes. Therefore: "If it somehow works - throw away!"
Support for the withdrawal
Prof. Herth pointed out that there are several forms of support for withdrawal, such as behavioral therapy, medications, nicotine patches or gums. Smoking consultations, such as at the Thoraxklinik, can help to find a suitable method. An alternative is the smoker's telephone of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg. On the effect of nicotine patches, the expert explained that if you take the nicotine through the skin or mucous membranes, it satisfies his addiction, but not all the pathogenic substances contained in cigarettes, with. However, it can take over a minute for the nicotine to arrive via a gum or patch in the brain. With a cigarette it is only a few seconds. The fact that this quick "kick" is missing seems to be one reason why such tools are not much used anymore. Commenting on the evaluation of the e-cigarette as an aid to weaning, Prof. Herth said: "There are scientific data from people who did not want to quit smoking. They got e-cigarettes and were allowed to smoke as much as they wanted. And of those patients, half switched to e-cigarettes. And then a few even stopped completely. "So also" non-willing smoker "can withdraw with e-cigarettes. However, it is still not clear what is in addition to the nicotine in e-cigarettes still contained everything.
Smoking can lead to weight gain
The concerns that quitting smoking leads to weight gain are apparently not entirely unfounded. Prof. Herth explained: "Smoking interferes with lipid metabolism. Smoking blocks the possibility of fat deposits. And if you then take the brake, you just take a few pounds. "To make matters worse, that smokers were used to always hold something in their hands and therefore they are looking for a substitute gratification, such as chocolate or gummy bears. "In the consultation, we therefore actively discuss that non-smokers increase a few pounds. Of course, that's also the behavior. Anyone who is active instead of sitting depressively on the sofa, of course, has fewer problems. Anyone who does sports, of course, also reduces his supposedly greater stress. "
Cigarette only does good for the cigarette industry
But what can one do to not give in to rising desires for a stink of glitter? According to the doctor, apps such as the "ohne Kippe" app are now quite popular. With this one could see, how health damages regenerate, if one does not smoke. If you feel like a cigarette again, you can "just look at how many hours you have done without it". In addition, Prof. Herth has suggested that smokers should reward themselves, for example, by putting the money they spend every day on their truck into a special piggy bank. In order to keep the fingers of cigarettes permanently, some conditions must be met: "The switch in the brain must be turned over. You have to want it active. If someone persuades someone to stop smoking, it will not work, "said the doctor. "Smokers need to understand that they only do good with the cigarette in the cigarette industry - and no one else."
