Correctly interpret warning signals and avoid burnout
For a majority of people in Germany, the workload in the job has increased significantly. Some sufferers put endurance stress and long hours away quite well. If you do not rest even on vacation
Some workers effortlessly put stress and overtime away. Others, however, are constantly struggling with fatigue and do not even rest on vacation or on weekends and feel burned out all the time. They suffer from a burnout. While there is no definite definition for this fatigue syndrome yet, according to the medical profession, depression, lack of concentration, chronic fatigue, severe inner restlessness and beating heartbeats are the first signs of burnout. Can one avoid it at all, or are our genes responsible for such a condition? This is a scientific work.
Environmental influences influence gene activity
Employees of the "Daimler and Benz Foundation" gene activity with their research project "Resilience (resilience) against stress and burn-out" exactly such questions, reports the news agency dpa. In their large study, the researchers were able to prove with approximately 1,500 test persons that not only inherited genetic material can contain risk factors for depression or burnout, but that environmental influences can influence the activity of the genes - positively or negatively. "There are big differences in the ability to deal with stress between different individuals. It is therefore of utmost importance to recognize protective and health promoting factors in order to use them ", explained project leader Martin Reuter, Professor of Differential and Biological Psychology at the University of Bonn.
Burn-out is not officially recognized as a disease
Reuter continued, "Burn-out is reminiscent of depression in its symptoms of lack of drive or flatness. However, it is more of a condition that can lead to depression. "However, this view is controversial among experts. The disease "burn-out" is not yet officially recognized in Germany and can therefore be treated only under a different diagnosis and billed to the health insurance companies. "We have to deal much earlier and more purposefully. Today, only ten percent of patients receive adequate treatment, "said Professor Martin Keck of the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich.
Various signs of burnout
But what can affected people do themselves? And how can you recognize a burnout syndrome? Anyone who feels tired all the time and does not feel rested after the weekend or vacation has signs of burnout, according to experts. It may also be accompanied by tension, reduced performance, stomach upset, sleep disturbances and difficulty concentrating. Iris Hauth, President of the German Psychiatric and Psychotherapy Association, Psychosomatics and Neurology (DGPPN) explained that sufferers can assume that this is not just a "bad phase" if such symptoms last longer than two weeks.
Counteract as early as possible
If you notice any warning signals, you should take countermeasures as soon as possible. A first step may be a conversation with the doctor. But you should also work on your own attitude. "You can set up a timetable, in which you consciously scheduled breaks in the evening and weekend," said Huth. The German Association for Burnout Prevention and Prevention (DBVB) in Munich has also recently pointed out various options for prevention. Among other things, the experts mentioned the identification and reduction of stress sources, targeted relaxation (for example through progressive muscle relaxation, autogenic training, yoga, tai chi, qigong), sufficient sleep, regular exercise, healthy nutrition and taking time off.
