Save lives in the holiday season: DRC calls for blood donation
The German Red Cross and other organizations urgently ask for blood donations. In various regions, supplies of blood and blood products are dwindling. The summer or vacation time decreases the number of donors. But you can also donate blood despite the heat.

Number of donors drops during the holiday season
As every year, warmer temperatures and vacation time reduce the number of blood donors in the summer months. In some regions of the Republic, it has already been reported that supplies of blood and blood products are running out. Therefore, various organizations are appealing to citizens to help. As the news agency dpa reports, about the German Red Cross (DRC) and the private blood donation Haema called for blood donation in the summer time. "The amount of stored blood regularly decreases in the warm months," said Haema spokeswoman Marion Junghans in Leipzig. The situation is also exacerbated by school holidays and vacation time.

Campaign with football stars
Blood donation services repeatedly create small incentives to motivate donation. At the Haema point of contact in Halle-Neustadt, for example, donors can use the free internet, eat ice cream or participate in competitions. Throughout the country attempts are being made to lure more blood donors ("https://www.heilpraxisnet.de/naturheilpraxis/durch-aktionen-mehr-blutspender-locken-2015061038423") with the help of actions. The DRK, for example, is counting on a nationwide campaign with football stars and hopes that fans will do the same and donate to their idols. Bundesliga players Alexander Meier from Eintracht Frankfurt and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar from Schalke 04 are participating in this campaign under the motto "courage donation".

Almost everyone could donate blood
According to polls, about one third of the German population could donate blood, but only about three percent do it. Blood donors must be healthy and at least 18 years old. If health permits, people can donate until their 72nd birthday. Before taking the blood, inter alia, the blood pressure and pulse of the donor are examined by a doctor, and - if not yet known - determines the blood type. A blood donation only takes a few minutes. A total of about one hour is required for registration, examination and snack. An hour that can help to save lives. (Ad)
