Avian influenza: Stallpflicht largely reserved

03/02/2015

In Saxony-Anhalt, the compulsory barn obligation, which was imposed due to the bird flu, is largely repealed. Similar steps have been taken in other federal states in recent months. The danger is not quite over yet.

Stall duty not canceled everywhere
In Saxony-Anhalt, a large part of the poultry is allowed to go outside again. According to the dpa news agency, the Ministry of Agriculture has lifted the poultry housing requirement after careful consideration. The regulation has been in risk areas since the end of November 2014 to prevent possible spread of the poultry flu virus H5N8. In recent months, several infected wild ducks have been found with the pathogen, most recently in late December in the district of Stendal. However, the stable obligation remains in wetlands such as on the lower Havel, Elbaue Jerichow and Lake Gülper continue to exist. The reason for this are migratory birds that rest in these areas until about mid-April.

Several federal states were affected
In other federal states, such as Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Thuringia and Lower Saxony bird flu cases were known and then imposed a stable obligation in some regions. Most of the regulations have already been lifted. The virus subtype H5N8 is relatively new in Europe. Last fall, the pathogen, previously only found in East Asia, was first detected in several European countries. The virus has not been identified in humans. Other types of viruses, such as H7N9, however, already. This pathogen has already led to deaths in Asia. Bird flu symptoms are initially similar to the symptoms of conventional flu. Therefore, infections are often not recognized. Infected persons may experience fever, cough, sore throat, diarrhea or abdominal pain. (Ad)
