A lot of unhealthy sugar in ice tea
Much sugar in ice tea: Better make healthy iced tea yourself
05/12/2011
The consumer center Saxony warns of the high sugar content in ice tea. However, parents could mix the iced tea itself and so on „defuse“.
Ice tea is not a thirst quencher
Due to its high sugar content, ice tea is not a thirst quencher, but rather a calorie-rich candy, reports the consumer center Saxony. Traditionally, iced tea is made from a mixture of black tea, lemon juice and sugar.
The varieties available in the supermarket often contain flavorings and a lot of sugar. Parents advise the consumer center Saxony to mix the tea itself. For this, 750 milliliters of peppermint tea can be mixed with 250 milliliters of apple juice and decorated with lemon slices and mint leaves. In general, juices are good for sweetening iced tea.
See iced tea as a sweet
Ice tea does not have to be banned in principle, but parents should consider iced tea to be sweet and pay attention to how much their children eat. The Consumer Center advises that children between the ages of 4 and 6 should not consume more than 150 calories per day from sugar and fat.
Ice tea can damage teeth
Since iced teas contain a lot of sugar and often citric acid (E330), dentists warn against excessive consumption. The citric acid can greatly reduce the pH of the saliva in the mouth. In addition, scientists from the University of Zurich found that excessive consumption can be rinsed out without removing minerals from the teeth and this, together with the sugar, can cause tooth damage.
