No habituation effects in LASIK

08/03/2012

Many people perceive their ametropia as a burden. Not least because of their glasses, which need more than 60 percent of Germans to see spicy. All the more annoying when the impression arises that, despite annoying visual aid, the sight continues to diminish. The belief persists stubbornly, visual aids worsen the view. In fact, wear glasses but only to sharp vision. Those who do not want to indulge in this direct comparison and, moreover, want more independence from the glasses, find in the surgical correction of defective vision the possibility of a glasses-free life.

"Glasses do not affect how a person's vision changes," says Dr. Kaweh Schayan-Araghi from the Artemis Ophthalmic Clinic in Frankfurt and board member of the Professional Association of Ophthalmologists of Germany (BVA). "Neither does it worsen or improve eyes. Because not the eyes get used to the glasses, but their wearer to the sharp vision. Patients usually do not even know how bad they actually look before putting on their new glasses. Only with the glasses you get an idea of what 100 percent visual acuity means. This immediate comparison results in the discontinuation of the glasses to feeling less visible without previous visual aid.

"If you do not like wearing glasses, Refractive Surgery - the surgery of the refractive error - offers a glasses-free alternative", explains Dr. med. Schayan-Araghi. The special laser correction LASIK, for example, is a proven and good solution for correcting sight defects. Prerequisite: the patient's cornea is suitable for eye laser correction, eye growth has been completed and ametropia has been stable for more than a year. As a scientifically recognized procedure, LASIK corrects myopia to minus ten, hyperopia to three, and astigmatism to about minus four diopters. In the past 20 years, constantly evolving, there are now many different ways of eye laser correction. However, femto-LASIK is the method of choice today. Femto lasers are used by doctors to create a corneal flap that, when folded to the side, clears the way for the actual laser eye correction - the treatment of the inside of the cornea. Since the laser works extremely accurately and cuts a very uniform and thin corneal lamella, this method is considered to be particularly tissue-friendly. On the one hand, this means more safety for patients and, on the other hand, that LASIK can also be carried out with severe myopia and a thin cornea. Surgeons then remove so much tissue in the lower layers of the cornea until the refractive power in the eye is optimally changed and the defective vision is resolved. Then they fold back the corneal flap, which automatically sucks and acts as the body's own patch. "From that moment on, glasses and contact lenses are a thing of the past and thus getting used to them - including the false impression that, despite annoying visual aids, the vision deteriorates," Dr. Shayan-Araghi together.
