Suspected germs cheese dairy calls back soft cheese
Listeria suspicion at the cheese factory "Zurwies" in Deuchelried near Wangen: As reported by the news agency "dpa", bacteria were discovered in a batch of red cheese from the dairy. Listeria discovered in red smear cheese
The cheese factory "Zurwies" from Deuchelried in the Allgäu has recalled various products because of a possible infestation with Listeria. This reports the news agency "dpa", citing a message from the company. Thus, in one batch of red smear cheese, the food-borne bacteria Listeria monocytogenes had been detected. Company recalls four varieties for safety reasons
As the company further states, to protect consumers, all products produced at the same time as red smear cheese and already on sale would be recalled. These are the following cheeses that have been sold as open products to cheese counters through various natural food wholesalers and retailers:
- Organic soft cheese "L'amour d'Antoine", minimum shelf life 18.04.2016 and 22.04.2016
- Organic soft cheese "Peppered puff pastry", best before 23.04. until 26.04.2016
- Organic soft cheese "Toco", minimum shelf life 22.04.2016 as well
- Organic soft cheese "Le Vacherin" Shelf-life 23.04. until 26.04.2016
Results should be published as soon as possible
However, Listeria has not been confirmed in these varieties, the cheese factory continues. Diarrhea and headaches from bacteria
In healthy adults, Listeria infection (listeriosis) usually has no apparent symptoms, but it can sometimes also result in flu-like symptoms or gastrointestinal inflammation after consuming infested foods. However, these complaints usually resolve themselves. For children, immunocompromised persons, pregnant women and the elderly, however, listeriosis can be a health risk. Symptoms such as fever, severe headache, nausea and vomiting often appear in pronounced form, rashes, inflammation and diarrhea are also possible.
In the case of an immune deficiency, the infection can even lead to severe sepsis and become life-threatening. According to information from the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety, the incubation period can last up to 8 weeks after the consumption of the contaminated products. The Bio-Käserei Zurwies is a small company with 14 employees on the outskirts of Wangen. Soft cheeses have been produced there since January 1991 and have been delivered to specialty stores in the region as well as nationwide via the ÖMA Beer GmbH to health food stores across the country.
