Father's Day: Many teens drink into a coma

27/05/2014

On Thursday, the time has come: men across the country will be taking wet, humorous excursions with cartwagons. Especially teenagers land on Father's Day with a rush in the clinic. The DAK calls parents to show exemplary character.

Almost three times as many adolescents with alcohol poisoning
On Thursday, all over the country, men will be able to watch cartwalkers on their wet and cheerful outings on Father's Day. Especially the young people among them often drink to the point of unconsciousness. According to an analysis of the health insurance DAK, the number of young comas in Germany on Ascension Day increases dramatically. As the health insurance company announced on Tuesday in Hamburg, almost three times as many 16 to 20-year-olds ended up in the hospital with alcohol poisoning than the average for the year.

After alcohol excesses in the clinic
However, looking at all age groups, there was even a slight decline on this holiday, as evidenced by the hospital statistics of DAK health for the past five years. The numbers refer to both sexes. According to the study, 4.5 adolescents between the ages of 16 and 20 are statistically admitted to a clinic every year after alcohol excesses. It was also said that on Father's Day „a significant increase of 180 percent to 12.6 cases. Among 11 to 15-year-olds, the number of treatments increased by almost 120 percent (from 2.3 to 5 cases) and in young adults between 21 and 25 years by 150 percent (from 3 to 7 cases).

Parents should show exemplary character
When all age groups are summarized, according to statistics, 69.3 people came to the hospital every day after unrestrained drinking. „On the father's days of the past years, the total number was 63.4 cases, almost nine percent lower“, reported the DAK according to a dpa message. Parents are called by the health insurance company to show exemplary character. „Teenagers are strongly oriented towards what adults show them“, said Ralf Kremer from the DAK.

Germans drink a lot of alcohol
„Especially with alcohol consumption, fathers and mothers should always remember that children could view this behavior as desirable and copy.“ Regardless of Father's Day, the Germans drink a lot of alcohol. According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), every German over the age of 15 consumes an average of 11.8 liters of pure alcohol per year. That's about 500 bottles of beer. According to the WHO, consumption has remained stable since 2008, with men drinking more than twice as much as women. In other countries in Europe and around the world, Father's Day is not a day of widespread drunkenness, but a day that fathers usually celebrate with their families, such as having a good meal.
