Superfoods Linseed instead of Chia
Superfood is and remains a trend. In the meantime, not only exotic foods are in demand. More and more consumers are discovering the benefits of local flaxseed and blueberry instead of chia and acai berries. For every second consumer, the regional origin is a decisive purchasing argument, a survey by the market research company Nielsen has shown.
More than 1,500 consumers were interviewed for the investigation. In addition, more than 500 consumers were interviewed about why they choose alternative diets.
Result: Consumers are buying more consciously nowadays. They want to optimize their diet and do something for their health. Many see the purchase of "superfood" as a way to achieve this goal. More than one in four consumers regularly try to supplement their diet with such products. "Superfood is not a protected term," says nutritionist Harald Seitz of the German Federal Center for Nutrition. "In principle, any food can be touted as a superfood and sold at a high price. The products are indeed nutritionally valuable, but no miracle drugs." Instead of changing individual aspects of the diet, it makes more sense to look for a varied and balanced diet.
"An all-inclusive food that does not exist, and to be honest, I find it extremely boring to restrict my choice of food," says Seitz. Of course Superfood does not do any harm, but an apple in between does it too. "
In 2016, Germans spent almost 45 times more money on superfood than they did in 2014. This is primarily due to a larger offer. In the meantime, superfood is almost everywhere available in retail stores. On average, superfood buyers spend 21 euros per year. The boom is mainly due to chia seeds, which are on sale in drugstores and discounters. Dried fruits such as goji or aronia berries and nutritional supplements such as spirulina, moringa and wheatgrass follow. Around 13 percent of Germans are interested in products containing superfood. Enriched foods such as cereals, baked goods and confectionery are becoming increasingly important. According to the investigations is the typical superfood buyer Großstädter and over 40 years old. These are usually couples or families with good income, who already pay attention to a healthy diet and also like to resort to organic and vegetarian alternatives. Heike Kreutz, bzfe
